Sunset watercolour

  • This sunset in watercolour has been kept simple. I firmly believe that when painting a sunset, the artist should ‘play it down a little – or else’! Again, a limited palette and a limited brush selection was used when creating the painting.
  • The two colours used for this sunset are cadmium red and French ultramarine. The two brushes used for this watercolour painting are the hake brush and the rigger brush.
  • Although this Ullswater sunset, which is principally in orange, may not look like it, it was in fact achieved using all three primary colours; yellow, red and blue. The sun ball was lifted out whilst the sky was still wet, by using a small coin with a tissue wrapped around it.
